Reverend Joseph was sick of the same old questions from nonbelievers. "How do you know what God wants? I want proof of an afterlife. How can you believe a book written by men?" He'd heard it all, and debated it all. If God made himself known, what would life be for? Certainly those unworthy of His holy kingdom would not feel it fair to be sent to the devil without a lifetime to display their spiritual filthiness. And the glory of Heaven wouldn't be understood without the horrible decadence of the world of men to compare it to.
Joseph had understood his path through life since the age of nine. Unlike most of his fellow Reverends, his upbringing was that of an upper class, liberal family of atheists. On his way to school one day, a drunk driver had hit his best friend right before Joseph's eyes. Panicked, afraid and answerless, Joseph defied his parent's teachings and, for the first time in his life, prayed to God for his friend's survival. Miraculously, the worst injury his friend suffered was a broken leg. From that point on, Joseph knew God was real, and taught his liberal views on Christianity to anyone who'd listen.
'If God has one enemy, it is pop culture' thought the Reverend, as he watched a performance by an ignorant stand up comedian on TV who took cheap shots at the Bible by blaming miracles on narcotics. Since Joseph's first encounter with God, he had noticed a great decline in religious interest as Americans fell into more and more of an unbreakable trance with their televisions. Anymore, a relationship with God meant a mental weakness to those around him, and his liberal views steered away most of his fellow Christians who understood that his spirituality was by no means a weakness. Determined to find an audience for his preaching, Joseph created a simple, yet foolproof plan. Amazed by the revelation God had sent him, he knew God would be repaid with a lot of new believers.
After hyping his new plan with "Absolute proof of God, free of illusion, and free of cost" for several months, his controversial plan had attracted more attention than the top 3 rated television shows combined.
Using some of his parent's fortune to build his Sanctuary of Religious Proof in the desolation of Antarctica, the airlines made fortunes on ads like "A one way ticket to God's arms."
As to avoid the cynicism and corruption that the media would no doubt use to ruin the experience he had created, he made sure that security was extremely tight. No one who entered Antarctica was allowed to leave after going through The Experience, as no letters or email could leave. Once you asked for proof, there was absolutely no return to your previous lifestyle. By working with food corporations that built on his land in Antarctica, Joseph made enough money to pay for intense security, making extra sure no information leaks occurred. Although he made little money, and had even less to spend it on in Antarctica, he was comforted with the knowledge that every day, thousands of new people saw his undeniable proof of God.
Curiosity had mounted throughout the world, and the lack of a cover fee intrigued those who tried to label him as just another evangelist.
Years passed, and more and more of the world left their lives to find Reverend Joseph's proof. America, England and other strongly Christian nations now found themselves predominantly empty of those concerned with religion, and the morality of the countries was so horrible, many moved to Antarctica not to satisfy their curiosity, but to escape the dishonesty, brutality, abuse and mistrust of their fellow atheists.
Several thieves and con artists attempted to find the proof that came with The Experience to sell back to the rest of the world, but security was too tight for any and all that tried. To know the proof, you had to live The Experience and become one of the new growing society of those enlightened in Antarctica.
Debates over the morality of finding Joseph's proof became violent, and, with greatly smaller populations and shaky governments, became impossible to contain by law enforcement.
Seeing America's defenses falter, terrorists became as much of a threat to the American people as they were to one another. Working overtime to try to stop civil war, the strikes from international terrorist groups took the government by surprise and devastated an already unstable nation.
In response to America's pleas, many allied nations came to aid in its defense, as well as to attack the nations aiding the terrorist groups. Other nations ignored the demand for peace, arguing that they had been under America's oppression for long enough, and such power cannot be allowed a second chance without endangering the citizens of many of it's rivals. Many other uninvolved nations aided those against America, some for the greed of controlling so much money, and some for mistrust of a nation stupid enough to allow religious morality to instigate civil war. Thus, World War 3 began.
Nearly 2 billion deaths later, Susan had had enough. She was an American citizen, and was afraid for her life. Having no interest in religion, she avoided the civil war, but was afraid of the bombings that had devastated much of the world and so many lives, and decided to go to Antarctica for the purpose of safety. Ticket prices were a fortune now, but she was desperate. She sold all her worldly belongings, and scraped together just enough for her one-way ticket.
Once in Antarctica, she was amazed to see how unaffected by the war the continent was. She was also surprised by lack of real activity- just a few people traveling to where The Experience happens, and a few living like hermits away from the society that had chased after Reverend Joseph's promise. But where she was, not so many people seemed to be- probably because those who have undergone The Experience aren't allowed to share their information with those who haven't. This last observation particularly piqued her curiosity- Susan decided to travel to the Sanctuary of Religious Proof to see what The Experience was all about.
Greeted with a large, white building which had a small wing for the office and another white building with smoke billowing out the top, Susan entered through where the path directed her, to the office. Susan was surprised to find Joseph himself behind the desk inside the door. She assumed he'd be busier.
"Ah, another comer to learn the truth. I'm Joseph. How do you do?" he asked, with a kind smile on his face.
"I'm Susan. I'm fine... I'm very curious to see what all the hype is for."
"Undeniable proof. It lives up to the hype, I assure you. God in all his glory! Please follow me, we can only show the proof once every other day, and the next demonstration is in two hours."
Susan found herself in a large, empty room, like a factory building that had been deserted, with about 200 other people. A few speakers, a large video screen, and large air ducts were the only decorations in the huge, white painted room. Anxiously, she waited with the rest of the people to see what it was that began the destruction that had devastated so much of the world.
The monitor flicked on, and Reverend Joseph's smiling face appeared.
"I'd often been asked for proof of God's existence, and I'm very glad to be sharing it with you all today." boomed his voice through the speakers.
A pause followed which was maddening to Susan, and the others waiting for the proof.
"The thing is... I can't share with you what I know." Another pause, and dead silence. "God will never come to you, so it's time you go to God" the voice echoed, as gas began pouring out of the air ducts. The people screamed and ran for the exit, only to find it barred shut. Susan sobbed until she was too weak to sob. She was feeling lightheaded and her lungs burned from the gas.
"God bless us," the voice cried through the P.A., unheard by the still ears of those in the room. "Every one."
